Jonny ‘Bones’ is in hot water with the law and his employment; at least according to UFC President, Dana White. That is because Dana has taken a personal interest in the recent turn of events for the 205 pound champ, and has requested him to come to Las Vegas for a meeting, after the news of Jones being arrested for a DUI. Here is what Dana said about the recent turn of events in an interview.

“It’s really sitting down and figuring out what is it you want to do. You’re 24 years old, you could be a force in this sport for the next 10 years and go down as the greatest ever – beat everybody, do all this stuff, be the first guy to break through and get a Nike deal, the first guy to get Gatorade and all these other things. Do you want to be that guy or do you want to go the other way? You can go the other way, too, and you can be the total bad guy, make a few million here or there and then go tell everybody to go, ‘(Expletive) off.’

It’s no different whether it’s the UFC, boxing, the NBA, the NFL – it’s the guys who really focus and get their (stuff) together no matter how old you are, whether you’re 21 or 31. That’s what we’ve got to figure out where Jones is at and what he wants to do…. The road is littered with talented guys who didn’t live up to their potential.”

While this special attention is understandable since Jon is their champion, and to some the new face of the organization, it is nice to see it is no different no matter what fighter you are. Dana was also seen saying that the UFC brass would be helping fellow ‘alleged’ drunk driver Ross Pearson through his troubles as well. The problem is that no public repercussions have been taken against these fighters as they have against less dastardly acts. The UFC has fired fighters for performance enhancing drugs, saying less than desirable comments, and for missing weight. The UFC may not be the law, but in Jones’ situation, he has injured the promotions integrity in the public eye, and could face some loss of income, and attention that would of brought future income. After the loss of TapouT founder Charles ‘Mask’ Lewis to a drunk driver, MMA fighters may want to avoid at all costs to perpetuate the circle.

Mas a pauta da conversa entre os dois não envolverá disputa de cinturão, adversários ou eventos. Juntamente com Lorenzo Fertitta, um dos sócios do UFC, o campeão dos meio-pesados terá que dar explicações sobre o caso do último sábado, onde foi detido pela polícia após bater o carro. Jones apresentou sinais de embriaguez.

White afirmou ao jornal americano "Boston Herald" estar decepcionado e chateado com o lutador. Jones sempre teve uma boa reputação e cabe a Dana White analisar o caso como apenas um erro pontual ou algo que pode ser o precursor de mais problemas futuramente.

- Vou basicamente sentar e perguntar o que ele quer fazer. Jones tem apenas 24 anos e pode ser o maior nome do MMA nos próximos dez anos, ou quem sabe até de todos os tempos. Pode ser pioneiro em fechar grandes patrocínios na modalidade. Resta saber qual caminho ele quer seguir. Pode também seguir o exemplo de outros atletas que ganharam muito dinheiro mantendo a fama de problemáticos. Temos vários exemplos assim no boxe, na NBA e na NFL. Cabe a Jones decidir qual rumo dar a carreira. Mas temos vários exemplos de caras muito talentosos que não fizeram jus ao seu potencial - disse Dana.

Um dos maiores nomes do MMA mundial, tido por muitos como o melhor lutador peso por peso do planeta, Jon Jones, de 24 anos, foi detido pela polícia de Binghamton, no estado de Nova York, após bater seu carro neste sábado. O atleta apresentou sinais de embriaguez, e foi levado para a chefia de polícia local para prestar esclarecimentos. Atual campeão dos meio-pesados do UFC, Jon Jones dirigia seu automóvel aproximadamente às 5h da manhã quando atingiu um outro veículo. O lutador foi levado pela polícia, e sua mãe apresentou-se ao xerife do condado de Broome algumas horas depois, assinando um termo de responsabilidade e levando-o embora.
